Snapping and Welding

Snapping forces vertices to the same location so they can be welded together.

Start by creating two boxes.

For this part of the tutorial it is best to maximise the Perspective view. Do this by simply pressing 'w' while the Perspective View Panel is active.

Enable snapping by pressing the Snap button on the tool bar. Snapping is not a tool instead it modifies the behaviour of other tools.

You are now going to use Axis Lock Translation to move a vertex on one box close to a vertex on the other box causing them to snap together.

Limit translation to the X and Z axes. Translate a vertex of one box such that it is close to a vertex on the other box. When close to another vertex it shall snap to the other vertex.

Having snapped the vertices together it is now possible to weld them together which will cause the two vertices to be replaced with a single vertex and the two boxes to be merged into a single group.

Select the vertices using rubber band selection. Rubber band selection must be used as it is necessary to select both vertices. A rubber band will cover both vertices where as if you were to click the vertices you would only select one.

Activate the Weld tool which is a vertex specific tool. Note that the Group List now shows a single group. Welding the vertices from different groups causes the groups to be merged.
